Michael Landy is a British artist born in 1963, who uses many different techniques and materials to create his work. He is best known for his conceptual art work and his installations such as "BreakDown", his most famous project. Another series Landy has created is 'Nourishment' which includes 12 meticulous drawings of weeds found in urban situations which he has made into etchings. He spent hours drawing weeds which he found growing on the edges of pavements or growing in the cracks in walls and kept them alive. This is interesting as weeds are usually seen as a plant that grows where they are not wanted and understood as something we try to get rid of whereas Landy's work encourages us to pay attention to their detail instead of ignoring them. This could represent how we rarely stop and look at what is around us, and how every part of nature is important and beautiful. Landy portrays this by giving each etching a title based on the specific plant giving it significance and enlarges it placing it in front of a white background,
My Response
To repsond to Michael Landy, I used plants which I found when taking my photographs, then scanned them in to Photoshop, changing them to 'Greyscale'. I did this as the tones in Landy's work are quite soft and low contrast, rather than bold black and white.
